Learning from Experience. It is a frase that I have frequently heard of on my time in the Inovation Academy. But, what is learning by experience? Learning by experience is the process in which knowledge is gained by learning through a specific experience, it might be by having a trip somewhere, presenting to a real audience or role playing. The latest experience that Ive had, was our IA class trip to Cosas. We are currently working on a project in which we are suposed to research about one great company in Peru and write a magazine article about it. Since we have a basic idea on how a magazine company operates, we went to Cosas to find out more. It is not about the simple fact of just going to Cosas, it is what happened there that really made this day memorable and full of learning. As soon as we got there we were welcomed by Raul Cachay one of the editors of the magazine. We went to a room and Raul answered all of our questions. The conversation went until it was finally time to go. The visit ended with a final tour of the offices. We could have learned also about how magazine companies operate in the classroom, but it wouldn't have been as successful as it was because we couldn't have had the experience of going into the magazine and having a profesional answer all of our questions. We also built a friendship with Raul and the people from Cosas who told us that they will be happy to answer any questions or doubts. Experiences are what build us as.
In the IA we have been reading a book called from Good to Great. The book analyzes 11 great companies and how did they become great. Chapter 3 talks about how great companies focus on the people first rather than were they are heading. I automatically made a connection, I was one of the last people to enroll into the IA and that was because, I first wanted to see who was entering the IA and then based on the people in there, I made my application. Great companies tend to have the best people on the job. They make sure that they have the best people on the job first and once they are really sure about that, then they can plan what they are doing. It is easier for a company to know what they are doing once they have the people because altogether as a company they can decide what they want to do as instead knowing what to do but not having the best people to make it happen. Having a great vision without great people is irrelevant. How can we have the best people if we do not know were we are heading? You will have the best people if you have the best working environment. In other words, the best people will come at you because they know that they will br working on what they love. Before thinking on what you are doing, think on the people you are going to use to make it happen.
If you can’t learn it, then you can’t do it. To learn how to earn money is a dream that every student has. With the Interest Based Group we, the IA students have the choice to choose something that we are interested on and make it happen. As soon as I heard of the idea, I knew what I wanted to do for the IBG, learn about the stock market and if possible invest on it. Learning about the Stock Market is really important to me because maybe it is something that I might be interested on doing as a carrer and having the opportunity at the age of 16 to have a real contact with the world of business, I think is just absolutely wonderful. What is even better is that we get to have our own room equipped with what we want to make this happen. Our group consist of 5 people most of us brand new to the topic but eager to learn. We have planed to get professional help from a economist to teach as the basics. Then practice investing using Investopedia an app that is a stock simulator. After we gained all this knowledge then, we will try to invest on the real market. But for know we will focus on learning. I am really looking forward for the IBG.
After a busy first day on the Inovation Academy, Mr. Bonnici told us to gather around for a group reflection. For me reflecting was just a moment where shared what we did on the day. In the IA, reflecting means something different. It is that time where you understand what you have done during the day, it can be either positive or negative. We went into the room, but this time more calmed and relaxed, it was almost the end of the day, the sun was out, as I was geting ready to start my long awaited first soccer practice. We went to the couch area and started the conversation. Instead of us telling what we did on the day as I expected, we started to think on those tiny details that we wouldn't normally reflect or even care about. On a big paper, a companion was writing all of the things we needed to work on. Yet what amazed me the most was the flow of the conversation, it seemed that each and every single one of us had something to write about. Those little details like, defining the roles better or taking a look at the agenda details I wouldn't even imagine being so important for the process were thrown around keeping the conversation long and relaxed. Thats when I realized that the importance of Reflection lies on the details not on the telling.
